Around one month ago my cousin got married in Atlanta. The dress code: black tie. I’m used to that dress code since it is common for Panamanian weddings but when you have a student budget options are limited. They expected a lot from me (that is what they told me many MANY times) so the pressure was on! When I finally got my dress I was able to get something I love for a great price. Some of the pointers I followed when shopping for my dress were:
- Have a set idea of what you want to get. This is the first step. It will guide you through your search and will help you have an idea of where to look.
- Establish how much you want to spend. My limit was $125.00 (student budget, remember?!) but I wanted to keep it under a $100.00 and I have to say mission accomplished. I kept looking until I found something that was in my price range and I was able to find more than one dress I liked.
- Ask your friends. Use all your resources. It is very likely your friends are going or have gone through the same thing as you. One of my friends had an event a couple of weeks before so she had gone through the same struggle. Thanks to her I was able to find a great dress for an even better price.
- Don’t settle for the first place you go. Make sure to look in several stores. If you see one that you like, take a picture. See if they have it online for a better price or if another store carries it at a discount.
- Don’t compromise quality. Having a low budget doesn’t mean you have to get a cheap looking dress. If you look hard enough you will be able to get something that looks good without overlooking your budget. Some of the places I saw a good option for a low price were Macy’s Last Call (the black dress is from there!), Nordstrom Rack and consignment stores.
Remember to always begin your search at least one month before the event. If you go on a rush, it is most likely you will not find what you want at the price you want.

Hace aproximadamente un mes, mi primo se casó en Atlanta. El código de vestimenta: formal. Estoy acostumbrada a ese código de vestimenta ya que es común en bodas panameñas, pero cuando eres estudiante y no quieres gastar las opciones pueden ser reducidas. Esperaban mucho de mí (es lo que me dijeron en repetidas ocasiones) ¡así que se imaginan la presión! Cuando finalmente conseguí mi vestido, pude comprar algo que me encanto a un excelente precio. Algunos de los consejos que seguí al comprar mi vestido fueron:
- Ten una idea de lo que quieres comprar. Este es el primer paso. Te guiará en tu búsqueda y te ayudará a tener una idea de DÓNDE buscar.
- Establece cuánto quieres gastar. Mi límite era de $125.00 (presupuesto estudiantil, ¿recuerdas?) Pero quería mantenerlo por debajo de los $100.00 y tengo que decir que misión cumplida! Busque hasta que encontré algo que estaba en mi rango de precio y pude encontrar más de un vestido que me gusto.
- Consulta a tus amigos. Usa todos tus recursos. Es muy probable que tus amigos vayan o hayan pasado por lo mismo que tú. Una de mis amigas tuvo un evento un par de semanas antes, así que ella había pasado por lo mismo. Gracias a ella pude encontrar un bello vestido por un precio espectacular.
- No te conformes con el primer lugar al que vas. Asegúrate de mirar en varias tiendas. Si ves uno que te guste, pruébatelo y tomate una foto. Mira si lo tienen en línea a un mejor precio o si otra tienda lo tiene con descuento.
- No comprometer la calidad. Tener un presupuesto bajo no significa que solo vas a conseguir un vestido que se ve sencillo, barato y mal. Si te esfuerzas lo suficiente, podrás obtener algo que se vea bien sin salirte de tu presupuesto. Algunos de los lugares que vi vestidos hermosos a un precio bajo fueron Macy’s Last Call (¡el vestido negro es de allí!), Nordstrom Rack y tiendas de consignación.
Recuerda comenzar siempre su búsqueda al menos un mes antes del evento. Si tienes prisa, lo más probable es que no encuentre lo que quieres al precio que deseas.
